The dynamics of haemorrhagic fever in Africa

There is increasing public health concern regarding viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs), a diverse group of animal and human illnesses associated with fever and haemorrhage. Using tools developed by our group, I will demonstrate how high-throughput sequencing can generate insights into the the timing and origin of cross-species jumps and the transmission of VHFs within populations. I will consider examples of Zaire Ebolavirus in West Africa, Lassa fever in Nigeria, and fevers of unknown origin in Ghana, as well as the dynamics of two novel, co-circulating simian haemorrhagic fever viruses in naturally infected red colobus monkeys in Uganda, and the challenges that viral diversity creates in developing vaccines.
