Abstract
In this talk, I will outline some of the recent work we have been doing in Cardiff studying the formation of low mass stars. I will cover the progress that we have made in understanding the origin of the stellar IMF and it’s relation to the mass function of pre-stellar cores. I will demonstrate the role of triggering in the formation of stars in a dark cloud in Ophiuchus, and also in the horsehead nebula. I will also describe how far-IR and sub-mm data, together with radiative transfer modeling has allowed us to study whether the properties of dust grains change as a function of density in a dense filament. These topics all provide a backdrop to the up-coming JCMT Gould Belt Legacy survey, which I will outline.
