Abstract
In the Regge limit string-string interactions and string-brane interactions can be neatly described by a simple operator, the eikonal operator. After reviewing the derivation of this result, I will discuss how we can use it to learn something about curved spacetimes in string theory and the form of the interactions between the massive, higher-spin states of the string spectrum. More precisely, I will show how the dynamics of a string in the curved spacetime of an extremal p-brane is encoded in the eikonal operator for string-brane scattering in flat spacetime. I will also describe in some detail the inelastic transitions caused by the action of the tidal forces on the string.
