Abstract
Through the use of colonial reports, aerial photographs, maps and satellite imagery, I have reconstructed the landscape of the Menabe region of western Madagascar between 1896 and 2005. My empirical findings show that there is a long history of forest loss in western Madagascar and that deforestation has been driven by the expansion of agriculture, which has occured in a number of booms linked to broader political and economic processes.
