Thanks to recent data, much has been learned from the CMB at the epoch of recombination. CMB studies are now focussed on two new main goals: using the CMB as a backlight to learn about the formation of structures at more recent times; and cleaning out these lower-redshift effects to look for key remaining signals of interest from the recombination epoch. I will discuss current efforts with the ACT Pol survey as well as what will be possible with Simons Observatory and CMB -S4 with a focus on the effect of gravitational lensing. I will finish by discussing theoretical work aimed at some related signals of interest which will be observable with the next generation of surveys.
