Abstract
Hyperbolic groups form a large and important subclass of finitely generated groups. They are defined by a geometric condition, and this allows one to use tools from geometry to make strong group-theoretic statements.
The aim of this talk is to motivate the definition of relatively hyperbolic groups, which are a way to generalise hyperbolic groups without losing too much geometric information. To do so we will look at hyperbolic 3-manifolds of finite volume.
