Our deep past is marked by recurring failure. Almost all civilizations that have existed have collapsed. Is our global society destined for the same fate? In this talk, Dr Luke Kemp from the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) will give an insight into the prospects of a future civilizational collapse and what it would mean for modern society. Archaeologists, anthropologists and others have identified causes of collapse such as inequality, complexity, environmental degradation, external shocks (natural disasters and invasions) and just sheer bad luck. He will examine modern-day metrics for these common causes of civilizational catastrophe to answer whether we are on the road to collapse. The results are both disturbing and hopeful.
