Most pieces of apparatus used by ancient Greek musical theorists to illustrate and sometimes to test their hypotheses were very simple, but one of them, described in considerable detail by the great scientist Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD, is much more complex and interesting. In his talk Professor Barker will present and discuss his home-made reconstruction of this unusual instrument, with practical demonstrations of what it can (and cannot) do.

This talk is presented by the Whipple Museum’s Science of Musical Sound Project and is open to all.
