Abstract
Abstract: The moduli space of stable curves parametrises projective curves (of fixed genus) with at-worst-nodal singularities and finite automorphism group, and its construction as a projective variety was one of the great initial successes of Mumford’s Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT). In this talk I will show how to construct moduli spaces of more singular curves, using the general perspective of ‘moduli spaces of unstable objects’. The crucial technical tool is a recent generalisation of Mumford’s GIT to non-reductive groups, due to Berczi, Doran, Hawes, and Kirwan.
