Abstract
The complex circuitry that underpins functional diversity of the nervous system is formed initially during embryonic development. A major challenge in the neural sciences is to understand the mechanisms that confer identity on embryonic neurons and control the development of precisely ordered neural connections. We approach this general question through an analysis of the development of spinal somatosensory circuits, exploring the molecular mechanisms that dictate axonal trajectory and cell body settling position. Our findings demonstrate that transcription factors that define subclasses of somatosensory neurons control select elements of axonal trajectories by regulating key guidance molecules and provide general insight into the way in which sensory relay neurons coordinate subtype identity and axonal trajectory.
