Abstract
I present a novel type of superradiance that arises in black hole binary spacetimes. Given the right initial conditions, a wave will undergo amplification when it scatters off the binary. This process is fuelled by the extraction of energy from the binaryβs orbital motion, so does not rely on the spins of the constituent black holes. Despite the inherent complexity of such a system, analytic results can be obtained in the limit where large hierarchies of scales are present; a limit for which an effective field theory (EFT) approach is ideally suited. In this talk, we will discuss how the general EFT for black holes interacting with external fields is constructed before applying it specifically to study superradiance.
