Abstract
Doors will open at 6:30pm for a 7pm start.
Join us for a screening of âPersepolisâ, which tells the story of a young girl as she comes of age against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution. Based upon the autobiographical graphic novel written by Marjane Satrapi, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and won the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. Time Magazine called it âboth harrowing and exuberantâ.
Weâre honoured to be welcoming Dr. Nina Ansary to open the event with a discussion of the filmmaker, the filmâs reception, and its relevance to Iranian history and the womenâs rights movement in Iran today.
Dr. Nina Ansary is an Iranian-American historian and author best known for her work on womenâs equity in Iran, whose research has countered conventional assumptions of the progress of women in Iran. Her multiple award-winning book, Jewels of Allah: The Untold Story of Women in Iran, âhas been hailed as the seminal work to explode stereotypes about Iranian womenâ (Marie Claire).
The event will run from 7-9:30pm in Trinity College’s Winstanley Lecture Theatre, with drinks and nibbles available from 6:30pm. To access the venue, enter the doors on the opposite side of the road from Trinity’s Great Gate, take a right and head up the stairs, and follow the signs directing you to the ‘Winstanley Lecture Hall’.
