Abstract
This lecture will introduce the various analytical tools used by scientists to unravel fake paintings and will illustrate the relevance of such analyses in a number of specific examples. In particular, the celebrated Vermeer forgeries carried out by Van Meegeren will be discussed. In addition, a comparison will be made between the different approaches of the Art Historian, the Curator and the Scientist in their study of paintings. Stylistic examination, as well as provenance studies, complement the scientific analyses.
