The long-term goal of our research is to discover the basic plan of subsystem organization in the mammalian nervous system. It is hoped that the resulting model will provide a fresh approach for systems neuroscience with a set of organizing principles acting as an hypothesis engine for experimental exploration of underlying biological mechanism. Results obtained so far with the rodent forebrain, which is required for the expression of voluntary behavior, will be discussed.
