Abstract

Cambridge is a renowned center for biotechnology developments and understanding biological structures is key to many studies.

The Cambridge biotechnology company Base4, has been developing long read length single molecule sequencing technology to leverage the key advantages of microdroplet systems to deliver high-throughput, low-cost sequence data from unmodified sample molecules. Building on this research Base4 has developed a novel microdroplet manipulation platform that enables the flexible, reprogrammable manipulation of aqueous droplets with volumes ranging from microlitres to sub-femtolitres. This talk will explore the challenges involved in developing this technolgy and the potential applications in medicine and life science, including next-generation DNA sequencing and pharmaceutical discovery workflows.

Barney Balmforth is a Director and Chief Operating Officer at Base4 and has a Masters degree in Physics from Oxford University and a PhD in Quantum Optics from Cambridge University.
