Abstract
I will briefly review key advances that led to the discovery that glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter receptor in the brain, presenting this work in the context of what was understood at the time key discoveries were made. The main focus of the talk will be on the diversity of glutamate receptor function studied using X-ray diffraction and functional studies on diverse species widely separated in evolutionary history.
