Abstract
In many astrophysical systems, such as accretion flows around black hole binaries, the infalling gas is very hot and dilute. In these hot flows, the plasma is fully ionized and magnetic fields are dynamically important. In particular, the dynamics becomes anisotropic with heat and momentum being transported primarily along magnetic field lines. This gives rise to a number of instabilities, such as the magneto-thermal instability, that can substantially modify the physical properties of the system and lead it to a highly turbulent state.
