Abstract
Ealdorman Ordlaf is famous to many as the author of the Fonthill Letter, a confusing but fascinating record of cattle-rustling, oath-taking, and outlawry in the reigns of Alfred the Great and Edward the Elder. He is also the beneficiary of Sawyer 368, a charter of Edward the Elder in the archive of Wilton abbey dealing with land at Stanton St Bernard, Wilts. In this paper I will look at the estate history given in the body of this charter and at its textual transmission to see how these give us more information about Ealdorman Ordlaf, and perhaps even cast lay literacy in a more sinister light…
