Abstract
The 2010 blowout of the Macondo Well in the Gulf of Mexico caused the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon and an uncontrolled petroleum release to the deep Ocean that lasted for three months. I will present a combination of scientific findings, personal observations, and lessons in media engagement, stemming from my experience with this event. I will share my experiences on site during the spill and in its aftermath, the pressures that come with conducting scientific research in the midst of a multinational catastrophe, and the progression of the event from active spill to legal aftermath.
