Abstract
PROMPI simulates convection and nuclear burning in stars. It is a fully compressible, Eulerian, finite volume fluid dynamics stellar evolution simulator based on the piecewise parabolic method (PPM) hydrodynamics scheme. It is based on the legacy astrophysics simulator PROMETHEUS and is fully parallelized using the domain decomposition method with message passing handled via the Message Passing Interface (MPI). In this software engineering talk I shall describe the experience of porting PROMPI to use GPUs and some early performance results from the new code. I will mostly present the initial state of the code and how I changed it to allow the addition of GPU code. This talk will not include any information about the research and the physics background related to PROMPI .
