Abstract
I will discuss the hypothesis that the cosmological wavefunction of the universe, e.g. the Hartle-Hawking state, might be the partition function of a theory with one lower dimension (with 3 space dimensions but no time dimension). I will argue that—-at least at distances above the Planck scale—-the Hartle-Hawking state satisfies all of the axioms of a local Euclidean field theory except for one very important axiom, Reflection Positivity, which is related to positivity of the Hilbert space norm. If we allow ourselves to relax this assumption, then it may be that an emergent time dimension is a generic property of a large class of field theories, and that the space of all such partition functions gives a nonperturbative definition of a unique quantum gravity theory, with no free parameters.
