Unique geotechnical issues in the Dead Sea region

Abstract
The Dead Sea Basin is an intracontinental basin located within the Dead Sea Transform that separates the Arabian and Sinai plates. The Dead Sea is a terminal lake, and it is the lowest point on earth, with water level currently at an elevation of approximately -414 m. It is tectonically subsiding.
The unique geological environment of the area has led to special geotechnical issues and some of these will be discussed in the lecture:
âĸ It is seismically active.
âĸ Use of standard soil mechanics definitions and testing approaches have been found to be inapplicable for its highly saline evaporate deposits and it has been necessary to develop alternative concepts and testing procedures.
âĸ Over recent years, sinkhole formation began and has been accelerating, presenting a serious danger for urban, industrial and tourist activity in the region.
âĸ Creep rather than primary consolidation has been observed to be dominant with regards to settlement of structures.
