Abstract

In the frame of this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG), commemorated on the 25th of November, and in line with the University’s strike action, we have decided to raise our voice, take a stand, and join efforts with the global mobilisations to address VAWG and GBV .

To achieve this purpose, a panel discussion with specialists working at the University of Cambridge on topics related to the ripples of VAWG across time and spaces, from urban violence in different regions to sexual misconduct in higher education (Group 1752) are invited to share and discuss their expertise at this teach out.

Panellists:

Dr Manali Desai, Reader in Sociology at the University of Cambridge. Dr Desai’s research encompasses the areas of state formation, political parties, social movements, development, ethnic violence, gender and post-colonial studies. Her research includes topics related to gender and sexual violence in urban and peri-urban India and South Africa.

Dr Tiffany Page, Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Cambridge specialising in social inequalities. In 2016 Tiffany co-founded The 1752 Group, a research and lobby organisation that works at a national level to address staff-student sexual misconduct in the UK higher education sector.

Dr Holly Porter, Lecturer in Gender Studies at the University of Cambridge. Dr Porter’s research has focused on gender, sexualities, violence, and local notions of healing and justice in northern Uganda where she has lived for more than ten years. Previously, she has worked in South Sudan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Azerbaijan, and Palestine in the fields of access to justice, gender-based violence, transitional justice, peacebuilding and human rights.

Ilaria Michelis, PhD student in Sociology (under the supervision of Dr Desai) at the University of Cambridge. She has worked for over 10 years in humanitarian response focusing on preventing and providing services to survivors of VAWG in various countries.
