Abstract
Modern wireless communication systems such as 4G and 5G are highly complex and mathematics is critical to the design and operation of such systems on many levels. Examples of relevant fields are coding and cryptography, modulation schemes and information theory, radio propagation models, antenna design, and distributed control and optimization of complex systems. I will give an overview of research at BT on these topics, and details of two case studies: (1) radio channel measurement and modelling, and (2) steerable antenna design using recent developments in convex optimization techniques.
