Abstract
In this work, I will present a generalization of the available potential energy (APE) framework developed by Winters et al. (1995) to the case of a fully compressible fluid with a nonlinear equation of state (eos), which relies on decomposing the gravitational potential energy (GPE) and internal energy (IE) into two and three subcomponents respectively. The new framework has several implications for our understanding of the energetics of turbulent mixing, most notably regarding the roles of the nonlinearities of the eos and of the relaxation toward thermodynamic equilibrium. It also suggests new directions for improving current parameterizations of turbulent diapycnal mixing that will be discussed.
