In effectively conveying complex information we frequently rely on accurate expressions of quantity, often involving number. However, such information can also be (intentionally or unintentionally) misleading, sometimes for reasons that are well-described by classic pragmatic theory, and sometimes for reasons that are more elusive. In this talk I discuss how subtleties of quantity expressions enter into subsequent decision-making, focusing particularly on the case of cognitive bias, and consider how we might hope to get a fuller picture of what numbers mean in context and how we should use them.
