Abstract
How should we plan for future conflicts over access and resources in the High North? A panel discussion with the Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP, Dr Michael Bravo, Scott Polar Research Institute and Charles Claypoole (Partner at International Law firm Latham & Watkins), chaired by Professor Brendan Simms. The panel will present the results of a strategic simulation conducted with students for the MPhil in International Relations, to explore the factors which will influence geopolitical decisions in the next five years, including the changing political landscape (domestically and internationally post Brexit), defence and deterrence, the likely effects of climate change, culture and local rights, and how this fits into currently existing international legal structures. The event will highlight the breadth of interlocking issues which will pose challenges for policymakers in the near future.
