Pre-processing of HDR video in the YCbCr color space, luma and chroma adjustment

Abstract
The talk describes two pre-processing methods useful for converting linear RGB data to a Y′CbCr 4:2:0 representation, especially helpful for high dynamic range (HDR) video. The methods target the luminance artifacts that can arise in saturated colors after compression when Y′CbCr 4:2:0 is used together with the perceptual quantizer (PQ) transfer function. The first pre-processing method, called luma adjustment, can remove the luminance artifacts, but the artifacts can reappear when the Y’CbCr data is compressed. The second method, called chroma adjustment, removes the artifacts in a way that is more robust to compression. Moreover, the resulting Y′CbCr 4:2:0 representation leads to higher compression efficiency, with a measured Bjontegaard-Delta rate (BD-rate) change of −2.4%. Subjective improvements in compressed material are also clearly visible.
