Optimising Embodied Carbon of Concrete Floors

Abstract
Despite popularity, concrete structures have their own environmental concerns. This study scrutinizes the conventional design and construction approaches of concrete floor systems in order to minimise embodied carbon. The design space of passively reinforced concrete floor beams is parametrically explored varying the structural depths, geometric profiles and reinforcement configuration. Deflection of each design is also assessed and compared with conventional benchmarks in order to understand the serviceability performance of optimised designs. The importance of shape optimisation and selecting the structural depth is highlighted in contrast to conventional prismatic beam design.
