Abstract
We still do not know what string theory is. After emphasizing the continued need for toy models of non-perturbative string theory, I will discuss old and new motivations for a string theory description of the critical behavior of the 3d Ising model. Then I will try to modify the Ising model so that the associated string theory is under better theoretical control, and describe what happens (based on 2003.04349, with Nabil Iqbal).
