Abstract
We propose a systematic approach to finding protocols which lead to phase separation with minimal dissipation in scalar field theories, with a focus on Model B dynamics. We employ a recent analogy between optimal control in stochastic thermodynamics and mass transport problems to answer two key questions: where in the phase boundary should an optimal protocol terminate to demix a given homogeneous state, and which dynamics should interpolate between the initial and final states? Analytic solutions are presented for the cases of phase-separation in Model B and Model A along with a proposed extension to our procedure for the case of active systems.
