The next topic is ‘thalamic control of cortex’ presented by Guillaume Hennequin and Flavia Mancini.
The thalamus has long been regarded as a mere relay station for sensory afferents, with relay to cortex possibly modulated by top-down cortical inputs. However, a new view is emerging, backed by experiments e.g. in the Halassa group, according to which the thalamus entrains with the cortex in order to regulate cortical dynamics, thus supporting cognitive flexibility. We will give a brief introduction to the thalamus, and review some of this recent literature with an attempt to connect it to a few existing models of cortical modulation.
