‘Everybody knows’, so they say, that the origins of the English lie in north-west European immigration into England between 400-600 AD. This talk reconsiders that belief by evaluating the evidence that underlies it, and considers other approaches to interpreting that past. It concludes that the emergence of the English should rather be sought in the complex adaptation, evolution and innovation of late Romano-British communities in the post-imperial centuries.
