Jihad: Meaning and Misappropriation of a Quranic Concept

Abstract
Jihad is a highly notorious and much misunderstood term. Drawing on the Quran, Hadith and classical scholarship, I will attempt to present a definition of Jihad in Islam in order to clear some of the misconceptions surrounding the subject. The objectives and laws governing Jihad will be explored as will the evolution of Jihad theory under Muhammad ‘Abduh and Rashid Rida. The Modernists response to the Western intrusion in the Islamic World will also be discussed. Finally we will consider how this comparatively innocuous phenomenon has been warped beyond all recognition by contemporary Islamic Radicals bent on plunging the world into permanent Manichean conflict.
