Abstract
The lac operon, an extensively studied genetic regulatory system, is responsible for regulating the metabolism of lactose in Escherichia coli. Existing models of the lac operon are in the most part deterministic, and have sought to describe the nature of induction in the operon by means of the bistability which arises in the non-linear deterministic models used. A model is derived using published as well as experimental data, and it is shown by means of a hybrid stochastic simulation algorithm that bimodality during induction results from the stochastic nature of the lac operon. Deterministic models, and hence bistability, are not able to predict the behaviour of the operon.
