It is a truism both that human evolution has been shaped by the environment, and that humans have themselves had a major impact on the environment. In this lecture I will explore more precisely what role climatic and environmental change had on human evolution, and the mechanisms that may have been involved. I will also consider at what point there is evidence that humans began to have an impact on the broader environment, and how this compares to trends in ecological and environmental change on a geological scale.
