Abstract
We introduce a minimal model for describing two-dimensional curved carbon structures. The model is based on the standard realization of crystal lattices which is extended by introducing next-nearest neighbor interactions. We demonstrate that, without any free parameters, the model is able to qualitatively reproduce curved structures like carbon nanotubes, cone- and saddle-like configurations near topological defects and negatively curved carbon crystals. Due to its simplicity, the model generally yields unique equilibrium configurations and is computationally inexpensive, suggesting it as a possible first step preceding more involved computational methods.
