Fiber Optics – Principles and Areas of Use

Modern computing heavily relies on networks to communicate between nodes all around the globe at the speed of light. It takes online a couple of clicks to send a huge amount of data to a distant location and we often take the service of the network for granted and don’t give it another thought. What is actually going on behind the scenes one may ask and this talk tries to give a pointer in the right direction. The use of light as a carrier wave provides us with the bandwidths we are accustomed to and Fiber Optics allows us to direct the light beams to their destination. I will cover the modulation of light, the physical principles behind fiber optics, and a short note on where this technique is used nowadays and how dependent we are upon it.
