Computing the second order curvature perturbations of Kerr black holes

Abstract
I will describe a formalism to compute the second order gravitational (vacuum) perturbations of Kerr black holes, a numerical code that implements that formalism, and example output from the code. To motivate this work, I will discuss several applications where going beyond linear perturbation theory may be necessary, including modeling the “ringdown” of (near extremal) Kerr black holes, modeling “black hole turbulence”, and the self-force problem. I will discuss what our current results have to say on those issues, and directions for future work.
