Abstract
Computation as we know it now is a vast field, composed of multiple different paradigms, and various mathematical techniques, but at its core about designing technology to perform tasks for us. However it didn’t always look like this; whilst there is a long history of designing machines, Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace are considered the pioneers of computing for their work slightly less than 200 years ago. Since then, the field has exploded into what we have today. In this talk I explore the development of programming over time, focusing on what decisions brought us to where we are now, and discuss where we might go next.
