Abstract
A Digital twin is a computer-aided platform that virtually represents the working of an industrial asset. While remote working has become the social norm, digital twins will play a major role in the operation of future industries. Its framework helps to bring an industrial process out of the four walls of a laboratory to perform experiments, modifications, analysis, prediction and diagnostics without requiring its physical form. In this presentation, we explore how the field of systems and control can contribute to building a digital twin. In particular, we investigate how to build a digital twin for processes that evolve over time as well as space. The digital twin is built on the basis of a) a modular modelling framework, b) a scalable computational tool and c) relevant usage of data. This presentation demonstrates how fundamental research on systems and control can be bridged with the development of a digital twin that can be applied to a commercial assent and improve its performance.
