Abstract
The Phoenix Society Presents: Lady Williams of Elvel, Secretary to Winston Churchill
Fellows Dining Room, Churchill College In celebration of Sir Winston Churchill’s birthday on 30th November, we have the pleasure of hosting Lady Williams of Elvel.
“As a young woman, Lady Williams, or Jane Portal as she then was) worked as a personal secretary for Winston Churchill. She joined his private office in December 1949 and remained with him until 1955, serving throughout his second term as Prime Minister. She is one of the few remaining witnesses to Churchill’s extraordinary working habits, and to the private man behind the public figure. Jane has kindly agreed to take questions about her experiences and her remarkable former employer (our founder) over Christmas drinks with the Phoenix society.”
Entry, refreshments and wine are free of charge for College and University members.
