Abstract
A sustainable future is axiomatically a carbon-free electric future. Emerging technologies that will usher in this new economy necessarily include electrochemical innovations in energy storage and in steelmaking. By way of examples of each, this seminar will describe the liquid metal battery (energy storage) and molten oxide electrolysis (decarbonized steelmaking). In the narratives of both of these emerging technologies there are lessons more broadly applicable to innovation: posing the right question, engaging young minds (not experts), establishing a supportive culture, and inventing inventors.
