Early research into the pro-social outcomes of virtual and augumented reality has focused heavily on their ability to create empathy through immersion. Yet, when creating effective social change mechanisms, empathy generation alone is usually insufficient- and may even be counterproductive.

This talk will outline alternative possibilities for using digital realities to enable the shifts in behaviour, knowledge, and cultural storytelling which underpin successful changemaking. It will then offer a brief overview of my ongoing research with social innovators, which aims to explore how these possibilities are being translated into real-world practices.
