Abstract

Amid social upheaval and civil unrest, Americans are being confronted with the hypervisibility of racial injustice and anti-Blackness that undergirds their society. The ripples of social unrest felt around the world have a profound impact on the disciplines of archaeology and heritage preservation. On June 25, 2020, Dr. Flewellen co-organized and chaired a webinar titled “Archaeology in the Time of Black Lives Matter.” This webinar gathered over 1,700 people to witness five Black archaeologists and a museum professional discuss permutations of anti-Black racism within the field and how they envisioned a discipline committed to eradicating racial injustice. This presentation will discuss Dr. Flewellen’s work with the Society of Black Archaeologists to create actionable steps that will lead to anti-racist archaeology in which antiBlackness is dismantled.
