Abstract
Robert Hartley is a partner and solicitor-advocate in the tax disputes team at Mishcon de Reya. Having been both an undergraduate and a postgraduate at the University of Cambridge, Robert worked for a time as a junior barrister before beginning a tax career. Alongside his commercial work, Robert has been a visiting lecturer at King’s College London. Drawing on his experience in direct taxes and indirect taxes, Robert will take a practical look at tax disputes in the UK over the last twenty years and how they progress from initial enquiries to resolution. The talk will touch on matters such as: developments in the way HM Revenue & Customs approach tax avoidance, evidential issues such as privilege, and the human cost of unresolved tax disputes. As well as its academic and technical value, this talk will also be helpful for anyone considering a legal career in tax specifically or in contentious matters more generally.
Series This talk is part of the Cambridge Tax Discussion Group series.
