Abstract
Numerical modelling plays a crucial role in modern engineering. It is used to conceive, test, and design new structures. However, we often find a rift between these models and their real world counterpart once these are built. Often the structural properties we have in our numerical model do not reflect a structureโs true state (ex: construction defects, miss-specified dimensions, degradation, non-elastic deformations, corrosion, erosion, etc.) The objective of solving Inverse problems is to systematically update our numerical model based on observational data in a principled and probabilistic manner. In our research we work to develop scalable methods for solving these types of problems on large finite element models.
