Abstract
Biology has a long tradition of developing concepts and models from data and the current explosion of biological data has attracted mathematical and computational scientists to the challenge. In this talk, I will suggest that there may also be another role for mathematical theory, in formulating an integrated conceptual understanding that is independent of particular experimental methods and data. I will discuss some of the theoretical challenges that arise in trying to get behind the data, illustrating this with work from our lab on eukaryotic gene regulation.
