Abstract
The B.1.1.7 lineage of SARS -CoV-2 was first identified in the South East of England during the Autumn of 2020. It is more transmissible than previously circulating variants and spread rapidly despite the second national lockdown in November. Over the same period hospital services were under immense pressure and the NHS was at risk of being over-whelmed. particularly in intensive care. Issues with hospital capacity are known to increase mortality. We conducted a matched cohort study to examine the independent effect of B.1.1.7 infection on mortality against this complex and shifting background of risks and biases.
