Abstract
Design of efficient and effective protection against blast loading from the detonation of high explosive blast requires a firm understanding of the loads that structural systems may be expected to withstand. But this sets great challenges for experimental researchers, as the peak magnitude of the loading may be >1GPa and the durations are measured in micro- or milliseconds. This seminar will discuss some of the fundamentals of blast loading, identifying where we have sound understanding of both the mechanisms and magnitudes of loading and where our knowledge is less certain, setting out the challenges for researchers into blast resistant structures and materials.
